Titilaka

Lake Titicaca, Peru

£££ - from £410 per person per night

An intimate hotel on the world’s highest navigateable lake

Titilaka lodge is tucked away in this unique landscape, totally off the beaten track on its own private peninsula, in a beautifully refurbished building. At an altitude of more than 3800 meters in the Andes, on the border between Peru and Bolivia, this cradle of Inca civilization is still home to one of the oldest functioning communities in South America – it literally looks and feels removed from modern day life. Plunked in the middle of some of the world’s most remote and spectacular surroundings, this isolation is also steeped in history.

It’s not just about the outdoors here - local artwork, excellent food and dazzling rooms remind you of the lengths the staff go to create splendour in this tiny, scenic and most exclusive spot. The Uros Floating Islands and Taquile Island visit is one of the most requested excursions. Built on totora reed, the Uros islands home the Uros-Titino people, expert rafts men and textile weavers from whom guests learn the ancestral techniques used to keep these islands afloat – utterly mesmerising.
