Humewood

- Port Elizabeth, South Africa

A traditional links course open to the elements on the edge of Port Elizabeth.

Humewood is a challenging links championship course on the outskirts of the capital city of the Eastern Cape -Port Elizabeth. Designed by Colonel SV Hotchkins, famous for designing a number of links courses in the United Kingdom, it opened in 1931 and has played host to the South African Open on a number of occasions including 2010.

The course is a genuine seaside links - one of the few in South Africa, with wide undulating fairways, fast ‘bent grass’ greens that hide all manner of subtle slopes and borrows to test your putting skills to the full. The thick coastal bush and uncompromising rough is there to catch any wayward shot. It continues to rank among the top 20 courses in South Africa.

It is very exposed to the wind and has two separate nines coming back to the distinctive white-walled and red-roofed clubhouse. The back nine are the more attractive and they snake their way through large dunes. It might be unlucky for some, but the 13th is a really demanding test climbing gradually up and over a rolling fairway to a green perched on the crest of a sand dune. There is no water to worry about but some very tricky, strategically placed riveted bunkers ready to catch the unwary.
