The Links

Fancourt, Western Cape

A Links masterpiece where the Presidents’ Cup was fought out by Ernie Els and Tiger Woods. A Top 10 course.

Unique to South Africa, The Links Golf Course just outside George on the Fancourt Estate was opened in November 2000 by owner Dr Hasso Plattner and course designer Gary Player. Created from a flat piece of land over 700 000 cubic metres of earth was moved in transforming this into a typical Links style course with undulating windswept terrain and dune-style landscape. This is a superb and testing Scottish links-style set-up. Every hole received detailed attention to ensure that the overall balance in terms of length, position of hazards and shot values in harmony.

Set to test the very best golfer in every way, The Links has some extraordinary holes, like the par three 2nd with its bunker in the heart of the enormous green. At almost 240 yards from the championship tee this is a tough hole. Gary Player said, "We included the bunker to break the green up but the front left of the green is severely sloped so the golfer can use the contours to get the ball near the flag. You will never be stymied by the trap…" Player added. And then there is the 15th a dog leg par four aptly named “Roon the Bend” with a green surrounded by water. Accuracy for the second is a prerequisite for achieving par as the water of the wetlands hugs the fairway all the way to the green.

As aficionados of links golf would expect, the terrain is open, the fairways full of rolling bumps and hollows and lined with sand dunes. There is deep uncompromising rough that awaits any wayward shots, long-carries from the tees, plenty of strategic pot bunkering and some huge uneven greens. Integrated into the design are some wonderfully natural wetland areas. Water is dangerously brought into play on a few occasions. Wooden-slatted walkways are used to get you from green-to-tee.
