More South Africa
Outside our top selection we felt it important to include some interesting courses which help cover the country geographically. This will enable us to create more varied itineraries for those just wishing to play golf, or make it easier and more fun for those interested in combining other activities such as Bush, Beach or the Winelands.

Hans Merensky
Highly recommended for anyone wishing to combine golf and wildlife. It is based in the remote Limpopo region and adjoins the Kruger National Park which means that wild animals, including elephants occasionally wander onto the course. The water hazards are known for the odd hippo and crocodile, so don't retrieve your ball! The signature par three 17th hole plays across a large dam where you may be distracted by the sight of a hippo either in the water or lazing on the course.

Champagne Sports Resort
Set against the magnificent backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountains, this course offers the golfer not only a superb challenge of golf on a perfectly manicured layout but also a scenic experience. With a fair amount of water and wetlands, this is a wonderful championship course well worth a detour if you are either in the Durban area or heading for the Battlefields at Fugitive's Drift. |

Zimbali
Zimbali on the north coast of Natal close to the town of Ballito has recently had a major overhaul and is now in superb condition. Designed by Tom Weiskoph this is a tough test of golf with some spectacular and challenging holes. The first 11 holes have been built on rolling open land, and the final 7 take you into the Zimbali Coastal forest. Golf carts are compulsory due to the difficult walks and steep climbs.

Prince's Grant
Prince's Grant is on the north coast of Natal near the town of Stanger about one hour north of Durban . The course has been built on a former sugar cane estate right next to the Indian Ocean. It's open, rugged appearance with steep inclines make it similar to a Links style course. This requires you to think your strategy through as many holes present you with a risk reward challenge. The back nine has some good views over the ocean and in particular the 15th where you can see for miles along the coastline. |

San Lameer
San Lameer is located on Natal 's south coast not far from Port Edward. Narrow and undulating, this is a true thinking-man's golf course where it is vital to keep the ball in play. It has a tropical layout famous for its numerous water hazards, palm trees and indigenous bush. The par five 13th is a real gambling hole where once you have got a good drive away you are left with the choice of finding an island fairway with your second shot or going boldly for the green protected by water.

East London
East London golf club is about two hours drive north east of Port Elizabeth. This seaside course offers incredible views of the Indian Ocean. The front nine holes run through indigenous bush and over sand dunes, and the back nine have a more parkland feel. The long par four 9th is one of South Africa's great golf holes, a dogleg played from an elevated tee onto an undulating fairway into a valley framed by bush.

Fish River Sun
Close to Port Alfred and an hour north east of Port Elizabeth, this is a remote and challenging course set close to the Indian Ocean. High vegetated dunes and thick coastal bush flank the fairways and if this were not challenge enough, the Old Women's River must also be negotiated. The river comes into play rather dramatically at the 12th hole, a long par 5 that winds its way along the riverbank. In addition the river must be crossed twice, both times requiring good solid shots to make it across.

Outeniqua at Fancourt
This is named after the mountain range that runs along the Garden Route course and is a resort course with very pleasing design features. It is kept in magnificent condition all year round, and in 2006 nine of the greens were resurfaced. The 5th hole provides a challenge, with a water hazard that dominates the right side of the fairway and green. |

Sishen
Situated on the outskirts of the town of Kathu in the Northern Cape Province, about two hours from Kimberley, this is truly a unique setting in which to play a round of golf. The course winds its way through 500 hectares of the Camelthorn forest on the edge of the Kalahari Desert. Considering its surroundings, its lush fairways and greens have surprised many a visitor to this arid region. Sishen is currently regarded to be in the top 25 best courses in South Africa.
