A place of raw scenic beauty nestled within granite boulders
There is a special wilderness area, encircled by the Erongo Mountains where the desert, mountain, and bushveld ecosystems combine – it is called Erongo Wilderness Lodge. It has rustic, natural feel with some of the best landscape views across the volcanic crater, forming the heart of this nature conservancy. This is a place where you really get a feeling for what Namibia is all about.
The lodge has 10 large modern tents, set on stilts set against towering granite formations blending harmoniously into the scenery. Each tent has mosquito netting across all windows and doors allowing only a cool breeze to enter. It’s a treat to enjoy a bit of luxury in such a remote place, each tent has its own expansive deck and best of all - a bush-style mini-bar. On a separate granite hill, the main lodge overlooks a floodlit waterhole. A birdbath nearby attracts somewhat noisy lovebirds and opportunistic dassies. A plunge pool is built into the rocks and although the water is a tad on the chilly side, there is nothing more invigorating than a quick dip on hot days.
The most recommended activity here is the guided walks. Led by a local qualified guide - who better to educate on history, habitat and conservation of the area? Game drives may include a visit to "Paula's Cave" – a secluded trove of ancient bushman rock art. After exploring the wilderness, relax with a cold drink and savour the last rays of another perfect day. A slow drive searching for nocturnal animals with the help of a spotlight will bring you back to the lodge in time for a delicious four course dinner.
