The Garden Route

Day One

Friday evening. Depart London Heathrow.

Day Two

Arrive Johannesburg, transfer to the Domestic Terminal and fly to George.

Arrive George Airport where you will be met and transferred to The Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate situated in the beautiful George area. A wide range of activities are on offer, including the Gary Player designed golf courses, a health and beauty pavilion, gymnasium, tennis courts, a squash court,  outdoor and indoor heated pools and a Jacuzzi. Accommodation consists mainly of garden suites or studios located around the golf course, each with their own special view.

5 nights Fancourt on a bed and breakfast basis.

On your first day you will have time to unwind and familiarise yourself with what Fancourt has to offer and maybe put a little time in on the practice range or at the Golf academy.  Your hire car will be delivered to the hotel during the afternoon at your convenience.

Day Three

A mid morning round of golf will be booked on Montagu, recently reopened after major changes and once again considered to be one of the best in South Africa. It is cleverly designed, picturesque and presents an enjoyable challenge to all levels of golfers. For instance there is the tough par-three 17th hole where a mid- to long-iron has to be struck over a wide expanse of water to a green strikingly similar to that of the par-three 12th at Augusta National.

Day Four

This morning golf will be reserved for you at The Links, a course designed by Gary Player, which was officially opened in November 2000. Created from a previously flat piece of land, over 700 000 cubic metres of earth was moved in transforming it into the typical Links style. The course presents rolling windswept terrain, dune-style landscape marking it a unique scenic beauty spot.

Every hole has received detailed attention to ensure that the overall balance in terms of length, position of hazards and shot values are in harmony. As a result, The Links presents a stern test in all weather conditions due to its extraordinary holes, like the par-3 second, with its bunker in the heart of the enormous green.

Day Five

A mid morning round of golf will be booked on the “Outeniqua” course. "Outeniqua" means "man with an abundance of honey" and while it is uncertain as to how the mountain range which broods over the course acquired its name, a round of golf on the layout true to its name is indeed the sweetest of treats. Feature holes are the par-three 4th with water down the left hand side as well as a semi island green and the 17th, a fine example of a risk-reward par five where the green-seeking second shot must attempt to carry a lake.

Day Six

You will be taken to George Golf Club just 5 minutes away. Nestled away in the foothills of the Outeniqua mountain range, lies the beautiful natural parkland course known as George Golf Club. Designed in 1931 it has since has been upgraded into a course that for the last 8 years has been rated in the top 10 in South Africa. This densely wooded course is an established favourite with the locals because of its scenic setting and memorable layout. The course feels as if it has been carved out of a forest but the fairways are a generous width, so only wayward shots end up in the trees.

Day Seven

This morning after breakfast depart Fancourt and travel to the Pezula Golf Estate.
This Championship Golf Course lies high above the Indian Ocean and the vast Knysna lagoon. It is a sweeping spectacle of fairways and greens rolling through the pristine indigenous landscape. The varied terrain offers a complete golfers’ menu requiring a full range of shots.

After golf travel along the coast towards Plettenberg Bay and Lairds Lodge, a gracious Cape Dutch style homestead, set on a twenty-four acre estate, with mountain views, gentle walks and a secluded swimming pool.

Laird’s is perfectly positioned to explore the Garden Route with easy access to superb beaches, hiking trails, golf courses, dolphin and whale watching. The African Colonial style rooms combine comfort with spacious elegant accommodation. Owners Alison and Murray offer a warm, totally relaxed and truly South African experience. Sumptuous breakfasts and gourmet dinners, specialising in seafood and venison, fine wines, intimate evenings and fond memories are the hallmark of each stay.

2 nights Lairds Lodge on a half board basis

Day Eight

Golf has been arranged for mid-morning at the Jack Nicklaus designed course Simola, set in the hills just above Knysna.  It has some spectacular views over the region with plenty of elevation and some dramatic tee shots to be faced which is accentuated by the unusual course configuration of 5 par 5’s and 3’s.  The signature hole is the par 4 eighth played down a narrow incline to a small well guarded green.

Day Nine

This morning is your last day in South Africa and so after a leisurely breakfast it will be time to depart Laird’s Lodge and enjoy some of the scenery along the coastal route to Port Elizabeth. Stop at St. Francis Bay for a late lunch before heading off to the airport for your late afternoon flight to Johannesburg and your onward connection to London Heathrow.

Day Ten

Arrive London Heathrow early on Sunday morning.

Cost from £1750 based on 2 people sharing to include all economy flights, accommodation as described, meet and greet on arrival, transfers, hire car, but excluding green fees, caddies, carts, excursions and any ammendments to this itinerary.
